Caring for Marble Vases

Caring for Marble Vases

Marble is an ancient material, a stone of kings, the choice of artists, and the building block of some of the most important works of architecture ever conceived. It is powerful, taking its strength from its mountain born lineage, and yet it is also dainty and elegant, with a smooth polished surface that glistens in the light. In the case of marble vases, this stunning natural material molds and melds with the underlying personality of the flowers used. This allows your vase to actually merge with the nature of the floral display, enhancing it while not detracting from its attractive façade.

When cleaning marble vases, it’s very important to be aware of the temperamental nature of the stone. Marble is very delicate, and there are a number of precautions you have to take when trying to maintain the beauty and luster of these pieces.

First of all, marble is a solid base in the chemical acid base relationship. This means a number of things, but most importantly, when its surface comes in contact with an acid, a chemical reaction will occur. This will usually take the form of a discoloration in the stone, otherwise known as a stain. For this reason it’s vital that you do not use acidic soaps or cleansers when cleaning these pieces. In general, all you have to do is wipe your decorative vase down with a warm wet washcloth, in order to remove dirt and dust.

Another thing that is important to know about the nature of marble is that in its polished form, it is very easy to scratch. That means if you use an abrasive wash cloth, brillo pad, or anything with a rough edge, chances are you are going to mar the surface of your pieces. Scratches are virtually impossible to get out, and the only real way to do it is to take it to a professional stone manufacturer and have them completely re-polish the entire piece. This can be prohibitively expensive and should generally be avoided if at all possible.

One of the great things about marble vases is that there are such a wide variety of options available. Not only do you have the solid white and black marble choices which are so classic and popular, but you also have a variety of colors, and even multicolors available for this material, allowing you to choose exactly the perfect design print to match the nature of your interior.
